Wedding photographers make a big difference to the entire event. Not everyone can pay attention to all the tiny details during the ceremony, it is the duty of the photographer to ensure every tiny detail has been covered and captured for future reference to these wonderful memories.
From the outside, the job of a wedding photographer may look glamorous and quite easy. It is the bride and the groom who have to pose after all. On the contrary, the work of a wedding photographer such as Kent wedding photographers Lovepear, is not all that simple. Sometimes it is highly complicated and the responsibility shouldered by them is very big.
Here are some of the difficulties one will have to face as a wedding photographer:
When you get into this field, it is definitely not an easy task to land contracts. People never take risk when it comes to their wedding photos, hence they tend to go in for the well experienced and highly reputed photographers who have carved a name for themselves in this industry.
How does one get all that experience without getting hired in the first place? This will be the biggest challenge faced by anyone in this field. One will have to knock on many doors, check with multiple wedding organizers, venues, etc to get their debut project. This can happen only with low budget weddings where the bridal party does not mind taking the risk. Coming across one such party is definitely a challenge.
Just a camera with couple of lenses will not suffice in this industry. One will need team members who are well equipped with both cameras and knowledge. These equipment are not cheap and it calls for a big investment and one does not enjoy the returns on this investment until they get a few contracts in a row.
Running The Business
Once you start this business, there are so many aspects to be taken care of. Right from buying or hiring the required equipment, landing the contracts, finding the right teammates to the right printers, it requires a lot of effort and dedication. You will have to take care of the budget, pricing, time, etc. From the outside it may seem simple – get a contract, shoot great photos, develop and print them, hand it over and move on.
However, in reality there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes and only the one who owns the business is responsible and answerable to the clients.
Right from the start, the work load is very high in this industry. One will have to run from pillar to post to get the promised job done on time. A lot of coordination is also involved as you will have to communicate with different teams for the post shoot development, the printing, the album layout, etc. In the midst of all this, the photographer will also have to get approval from the client for every step.
Work Life Balance
Weddings don’t happen from 9 AM to 5 PM like other professions. There will be a pre wedding shoot, a post wedding shoot, an early morning shoot, the cocktail party shoot, etc. This will take up the entire time of the photographer. When you are in this field, it is easy to get carried away and lose out on the other aspects of life. One must be able to balance this and other projects in addition to their personal life as well.
Initially it may seem fine but as the number of projects increase, one will be so engulfed in this world and drama, they will eventually lose the passion for this field which attracted them to wedding photography in the first place.
People don’t get married on all days of the year. Wedding is seasonal and hence a wedding photographer will get contracts only at these times. When it is not the wedding season, a photographer will have to keep the business running by getting other contracts and projects. This is important to keep both the funds coming in and the team members busy.
Though the financial and time investment is high in the field, the returns are not that high in the beginning. One can charge all the infamous wedding photographer rates only when they have a high reputation and enough experience. Also since this is a seasonal field, one does not have a steady inflow of funds. The costs involved have to be kept low without compromising on the quality, so that one can at least break even if not make a big profit.
